Watch Maintenance Guide from Jackson Jewelers
Watch Maintenance Guide from Jackson Jewelers
A quality watch is crafted to stand the test of time, often becoming a cherished heirloom. However, proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve its function and beauty. Here’s our expert advice on keeping your watch in exceptional condition for years to come.
General Cleaning
Regular cleaning keeps your watch in peak condition. Dust, dirt, moisture, and perspiration can accumulate over time. A quick wipe-down maintains both appearance and function:
- Non-Water-Resistant Watches: Use a dry, soft cloth to clean. Avoid moisture exposure.
- Water-Resistant Watches: Use a damp cloth for the case, then dry with a soft cloth. For metal bracelets, clean with mild soapy water and a soft toothbrush.
Maintenance Schedule
To ensure optimal performance, a full movement overhaul is recommended every 5-7 years, especially for mechanical watches. This service refreshes and revitalizes your watch, keeping it accurate and reliable.
Winding and Setting
- Manual Watches: Fully wind your watch at the same time daily. Stop winding once resistance is felt.
- Automatic Watches: Wear daily for best performance. To start, wind the crown 20-40 turns. Secure screw-down crowns for water resistance. Wind every two weeks if worn daily, or twice a week if not.
- Setting the Date: Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM to prevent strain on internal components. Adjust outside this window for smooth functioning.
Battery Replacement
Quartz watch batteries last 1-3 years, depending on movement type and watch functions. Replace promptly when the battery stops to avoid leakage and potential damage.
Water Resistance
Water resistance diminishes over time as gaskets and seals wear down. If you notice condensation or oxidation, bring it in immediately for service.
Swimming with your watch:
- Always secure the crown before water exposure.
- Avoid adjusting the crown or buttons while in water.
- Rinse with fresh water after exposure to salt or chlorinated water.
- Rotate bezels during cleaning to prevent debris buildup.
Things to Avoid
- Impacts: Strong impacts can damage internal components, crystal, dial, and hands. If an issue arises, consult our experts for repair.
- Extreme Temperatures: Avoid exposing your watch to temperatures above 140°F (60°C) or below 32°F (0°C), as this can affect accuracy and water resistance.
- Magnetic Fields: Mechanical watches are sensitive to magnets, which may disrupt timing. Keep your watch away from speakers, phones, or magnets. If magnetized, we offer de-magnetization services.
- Chemicals: Avoid exposure to cosmetics, perfumes, or household cleaners, as these can damage the case, strap, or gaskets. Always put on your watch after applying such products.
